Canter Safari in Corbett National Park

Available only inside the Dhikala zone of the park, the canter safari offers tourists to witness the rarest of the rare wildlife. There are high chances of you spotting the Royal Bengal Tiger on your canter safari. A total of two canters, with 16 tourists in each, go inside the park accompanied by an expert naturalist and a forest gunman.

Widely known for its fauna and flora, Jim Corbett National Park has become one of the favourite tourist destinations in the past few years.

Located in Nainital and Pauri Garhwal districts of Uttarakhand, Jim Corbett National Park is one of the oldest national parks in India. It was established in 1936 and was named after hunter Jim Corbett.

Having around 488 different species of plants and over 586 species of resident and migratory birds, the park is also home to Bengal tigers, leopards, barking deer, sambar deer, hog deer and chital, golden jackal, sloth and Himalayan black bears, Indian grey mongoose, otters, yellow-throated martens, Himalayan goral, Indian pangolins, langur, rhesus macaques, Indian elephants, Indian python and a number of reptiles, amphibians and fishes.

The Corbett Tiger Reserve is spread over an area 1288 sq. km., which is divided into two areas – core area which covers 520 sq. km and which forms the Jim Corbett National Park and the other known as buffer area of 308 sq. km which includes reserve forests as well as Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary.

The Tourist Zones (Entry Gates)

In order to ensure proper management of the tourism inside the jungle, the Park has been divided into five zones. Though all the zones are pretty much similar to each other, there is uniqueness about each. So while you may spot a tiger in one zone due to the presence of a water body there, you may end up getting a good view of a herd of elephants due to marshlands in the other zone.


The division of the area into different zones also enables tourists to get a closer and better view of the surrounding flora and fauna.

Bijrani Safari Zone

If you’re lucky, you might spot a tiger in the open grasslands of the Bijrani zone, which is at a distance of 1km from Ramnagar.

Jhirna Safari Zone

One of the popular zones among the six ecotourism zones, it is located at a distance of 16kms from Ramnagar, Jhirna Zone is open for tourists round the year.

Dhela Safari Zone

Being the only area in the buffer zone that’s open to tourists, it’s populated by elephants, leopards, tigers and bears. It’s the sixth ecotourism zone of the park and is located at a distance of 13km from Ramnagar.

Durga Devi Zone

Being lauded as the most picturesque zone in Corbett National Park, the Durga Devi Zone is located at a distance of 36kms from Ramnagar.

Corbett Landscape (Sitabani) Zone

Corbett Landscape (Sitabani) Zone doesn't fall under the Corbett Tiger Reserve area. If you are fond of serene ambiance of the natural beauty, must visit Sitabani area.

Dhikala Zone

Tigers, wild elephants, hog deer, chital and numerous other animals can be spotted in the zone which is located at a distance of 18kms from Ramnagar. A night stay for wildlife enthusiasts is highly recommended in this zone.

Garjia Zone

Newly opened entry gate just around 2 kilometers from Ramnagar shares its border with Bijrani zone.

Dhikala Forest Lodge

Jim Corbett National Park is the sole national park in India that offers night stay inside its Jungle. Dhikala forest lodge is a historic structure, have been built over a hundreds of year ago by Britishers. This old rest house is very much popular among tourists. It offers snug accommodation option with breathtaking vistas of flora and fauna. Though it is not very much luxury but the staying experience amidst jungle is something simply unforgettable. The tourism inside the park is run and managed by forest department.

Dhikala Booking Procedure

  • Name, Age, Gender, ID Proof (Passport No., PAN No., Voter ID, Adhar No.) of tourists needs to be provided along with the confirmatory amount to carry out the further booking process
  • Availability of the dormitory/rooms shall be confirmed 90 days prior to the date of actual arrival

Inside Corbett Tiger Reserve zone wise Night Stay Accommodation facilities are available as follows:

Accommodation facilities are available in Dhikala, Sarpdhuli, Gairal, Sultan, Bijrani, Malani, Jhirna, Dhela, Halduparao, Kanda and Lohachaur in the Sonanadi Tourism Zone. All rooms are provided with double beds and with basic amenities. A twelve bed dormitory at Dhikala and an eight bed dormitory at Gairal are also available for the visitors intending to stay inside the forest.

Inside Corbett Tiger Reserve zone wise Jeep Safari facilities are available as follows:

Apart from Night Stay Accommodation facilities in the forest rest houses, Corbett Tiger Reserve also offers Day Visit/Jungle Safari facilities for the visiting tourist. This is a preferred way by many tourists to visit the park who cannot come for longer stays or wish to stay outside the park. The Day Visit/Jungle Safari is done 'only' with vehicles registered with the park administration as private vehicles are not allowed inside the park.

The other mode to visit the picturesque park is via the 'Ramganga conducted tour' which takes the tourists to the Dhikala Zone for Day Visit in Canters (capacity of up to 16 adults). Every day two Canter rides are conducted in morning and two in the evening shifts.

Every tourist season, Dhikala Ecotourism zone open after monsoon on 15th of November for day visit (via Ramganga Conducted Tours), while Durga Devi and Bijrani Zone opens for day visits from 15th of October onwards. Jhirna and Dhela remain open throughout the year for day visits. The Bijrani ecotourism zone is famous among the tourists for its beautiful Sal forest and expansive grasslands. Elephant safari is conducted here for the willing visitors. The safaris are a great source of learning for the visitors about Indian Wildlife and conservation efforts.
Along with Bijrani, for the convenience of visitors and streamlining tourism management in Corbett Tiger Reserve, the reserve has been divided into six mutually exclusive tourism zones, each having separate gate for entry.

How to Reach Jim Corbett National Park

Ramnagar is perhaps the best approach to the Corbett National Park which forms the headquarters of CTR. This small city is well connected by road and rail network with major cities of India like Delhi, Moradabad, Nainital and Bareilly. Once you reach Ramnagar, then it takes only half an hour to reach Corbett National Park. The park is around 15 Kms from Ramnagar railway station.

By Road: Ramnagar has a very good network of road that connects the different cities. The Corbett National Park is situated at an approximate surface distance of 260 Kilometres from India's national capital Delhi. The state government of Uttarakhand plies buses at a short interval of time from Delhi, Moradabad, Haldawani, and Nainital that reaches Corbett directly.

By Rail: The railway station in Ramnagar receives trains from different major cities of India like Delhi, Moradabad and Bareilly. A direct train to Ramnagar runs from Delhi. You can check out for Ranikhet Express, Corbett Link Express and Kathgodam Express that takes you directly to Ramnagar.

By Air: Dehradun and Delhi are the nearest airports. Regular flights have also started from the nearby Pantnagar Airport in Udham Singh Nagar District.

Watchtowers and Machans:

The Dhikala and Bijrani have a number of watchtowers and machans. After getting permission from the authorities, one can use these for viewing wildlife.

Wildlife Movie Show:

Library Facilities:

Corbett Museum is located at Kaladhungi, some 30 kms from Ramnagar on the way to Nainital. Corbett Museum has been setup in the heritage bungalow of Jim Corbett. This magnificent museum brings back the memories of old days and teaches a lot about the life and activities of Jim Corbett who lived here and is till date loved and revered by the inhabitants of the village.
